Canberrans are learning about My Health Record which all Australians will receive by the end of 2018, unless they choose not to have one.

My Health Record is a digital library of your health documents which can provide potential benefits including fewer hospital admissions and adverse drug events, reduced duplication of tests, supporting coordination of care for people with chronic and complex conditions, better informed treatment decisions and a more effective and efficient healthcare system.

Capital Health Network (CHN), ACT’s Primary Health Network, has been engaging with the Canberra community, general practices and community pharmacies about My Health Record. In the ACT pleasingly 86% of general practices are registered to use My Health Record.  Since earlier this year, the number of My Health Record registered community pharmacies has increased dramatically from 5% to 46% in the ACT.

CHN has attended over 90 community events and has spoken to Canberrans about what the record is, answered questions and addressed concerns. CHN Acting Chief Executive Julie Porritt says taking the time to learn about how having a digital health record can benefit individuals and their families is important.

“There are so many ways in which having a My Health Record can benefit your family. It allows you to list your allergies, view pathology and diagnostic imaging test reports and allows you to choose a loved one or carer as a nominated representative to view your record and be involved in your medical care.  My Health Record could assist your doctors in an emergency, or just keep you and your providers in the loop on your current medications and medical conditions.  We look forward to talking more with our community about how My Health Record could help them,” said Ms Porritt.
