Registration Pathways

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) assesses the knowledge, clinical skills and professional attributes of overseas qualified medical practitioners seeking registration to practise medicine in Australia.

International Medical Graduates - Competent Authority Pathway

Practitioners who completed their medical education in the UK, Canada, United States, Ireland or New Zealand may be eligible for the Competent Authority Pathway.

International Medical Graduates - Specialist Pathway

The Specialist pathway is open to:

  • Overseas trained specialists whose qualifications have been partially recognised by an Australian/Australasian specialist college
  • Overseas trained specialists seeking work as an Area of Need specialist
  • Overseas trained specialists and specialists-in-training who wish to undertake training in Australia for a limited period (for example, one year).

What do I need to do to work as a GP in Canberra, Australia?

The process of applying to work as a General Practitioner in Australia is relatively straightforward but cannot be done quickly. Please allow six to nine months to complete all steps and paperwork required.

"Even if you have found a suitable GP position in Australia for which an employer has indicated your suitability and offered it to you, do NOT sell your house or resign from your existing job overseas until you have confirmation from the appropriate authorities that you will be receiving appropriate medical registration for the position and an appropriate visa" (advice from www.doctorconnect.gov.au)
