The Next Step Mental Health coaching service (previously NewAccess, developed by beyondblue) is a low intensity, confidential support service to help people tackle day to day pressures. The term low intensity refers to the approach to service delivery rather than the severity of the presentation.

It is provided at no cost to the participants.

The service is a short term, intensive program that uses a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach to help you work through problems you may be experiencing in your life. It is a form of guided self-help and offers practical strategies to help you work through problems such as mild anxiety, depression and day to day life stress. The program is delivered over six sessions and these are delivered weekly.

At the first appointment, a coach will complete an initial assessment and work with the client to develop a program tailored to individual needs.


The low intensity service is delivered by Coaches, a non-clinical workforce who have received intensive, structured training and are supervised by Mental Health Professionals through the CBT Institute.

Over the phone or face-to-face (Locations: Woden; Watson; Headspace)


The low intensity service is for people:

  • over 16 years of age 
  • with early symptoms of mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety
  • work/live/study in the ACT 
  • not currently accessing other psychological intervention services.
  • Who do not have a diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Referral Information

There are two options for referral:

  • Self-referral by calling (02) 6287 8066
  • With clients’ consent, GPs and other health professionals can call on behalf of the client or complete and fax a Next Step Referral form.
