These Medicare initiatives are designed to identify and reduce the number of patients of obtaining PBS subsidised medicine in excess of their medical need. The Prescription shopping Information Service (PSIS) is available to registered prescribers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and can provide information on the prescription history of people identified by the Prescription Shopping Program (PSP) up to the last 24 hours. An alert service can also notify prescribers if they have prescribed to a patient of concern.
To be identified by the PSP, a person has within any 3 month period, had supplied to them:
- Items prescribed by 6 or more different prescribers, and/or
- A total of 25 or more Target items, and/or
- A total of 50 or more items.
Target items are analgesics, anti-epileptics, anti-parkinson medicine, psycholeptics (including antidepressants), and all other nervous system medicine.
Prescribers can call the PSIS 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or get a Patient Summary Report online via Health Professional Online Services (HPOS). If the patient has met the PSP criteria, prescribers can find out the number of PBS medicines supplied to the patient, and the number of different prescribers.
