Imagine having all your healthcare decisions made by someone else. This is a reality for many people with disability or mental ill-health who confront barriers exercising their right to decide in healthcare settings. This reality can be challenging for healthcare consumers, carers, families and health professionals alike.
Using a ‘hypothetical’ panel format and audience participation, this forum will explore how supported decision making might work in healthcare services.
- What difference might supported decision making have on the health outcomes of people with disability or mental ill-health?
- Whose role is it to ensure support is available when and where it is needed?
- What might be the tensions between support and privacy, dignity of risk and duty of care, and what is the difference between safety and safeguards?
The panel will be facilitated by Linda Crebbin. Fiona May and Helen Connolly from ADACAS will introduce the forum. Panellists include:
