Position Description

The Mental Health Clinician will work collaboratively with a young person and their family to identify their support needs, goals and develop collaborative care plans. The incumbent will provide high quality psycho-social assessment and evidence-based, focused psychological interventions to young people aged 12 to 25 referred to headspace Canberra.

This position requires working closely with the other members of the headspace team and external service providers to maximise care outcomes for young people referred to headspace Canberra, along with fostering a culture of youth friendly, socially, and culturally inclusive service experience for young people. Reporting and Decision Making. The Mental Health Clinician reports to the Service Manager – headspace Canberra. Decisions are mostly guided by existing policy and procedure.

The Mental Health Clinician:

  • Consults with the Manager on responsibilities and recommends actions to support organisational goals.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement within their role, the team, and the organisation, gathering information to develop and implement solutions where appropriate.
  • Seeks Manager approval for decisions beyond delegated authority or policy scope.

In addition to the accountabilities outlined within this document, the Mental Health Clinician is required to act and perform with integrity and in accordance with the organisation’s code of conduct and GPH values.

Selection Criteria

The essential experience, knowledge, skills, competencies and qualifications a person requires in order to successfully fulfil the responsibilities of the position are:

  1. Current AHPRA registration as a Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist, Provisional Psychologist, or Occupational Therapist (accredited with OTA as meeting the Australian Competency Standards in mental health) or qualifications in social work and has (or willing to work towards) accreditation with the AASW as a Mental Health Social Worker
  2. Experience in assessment and diagnosis of mental health disorders, provision of Cognitive- Behaviour Therapy and other evidence-based focused psychological strategies.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of key issues in relation to the health and wellbeing needs of young people with mental health and/or substance use problems.
  4. Demonstrated ability to engage and communicate effectively with young people, and their family and friends.
  5. High standard of computer literacy and data entry competency including MS office and demonstrated capacity to learn new technologies including clinical software packages.

  • Satisfactory National Criminal Record Check.
  • Working with Children Check (NSW) / Working with Vulnerable People Check (ACT) for paid employment.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Vaccinations as required by GPH policy.

headspace Canberra provides early intervention mental health services to young people aged 12-25 who have or may be at risk of developing a mental health and/or substance use disorder or have economic and social recovery needs. It is a part of the Youth Mental Health Group within Grand Pacific Health (GPH).
