Initial Assessment and Referral Decision Support Tool (IAR-DST) Program for Mental Health

The IAR and IAR-DST is an initiative of the Commonwealth Government aiming to support our mental health sector by providing evidence-informed framework and tool to support clinicians and service providers. The IAR creates a shared language and is used in conjunction with clinical judgement and experience to support mental health referrals and recommendations, aiding in appropriate care when a person needs it.

What is the IAR?

CHN is supporting the implementation of the IAR by offering local training to:

  • GPs
  • Practice Nurses
  • Mental Health Nurses
  • Mental Health Allied Health Professionals
  • Community-based Mental Health Service Staff
  • Mental Health Clinicians and Clinic support staff.

Training will cover:

  • Introduction to the IAR
  • Orientation to the 8 domains
  • Orientation to the 5 levels of care and decision support tool (IAR-DST)
  • Practical activity using the IAR-DST with a case study (1 hour)
  • Discussion on supported decision making and the IAR.

All participants will receive 2 hours CPD to self-report and a certificate of attendance.

GPs and GP registrars are eligible for a once of incentive payment of $300. RACGP members will receive 1.5 hrs EA and 0.5 hrs RP for CPD.
