HIV and STIs – RACGP NSW&ACT invites ACT GPs and staff to join and be part of this movement
In no other disease area have we seen advancements in treatment and testing like we have in HIV over the last 30 years. With GPs making half of the new HIV diagnoses in NSW, GPs play an integral role in achieving NSW Health’s goal, especially due to the opportunities they have to test patients that other HIV specific clinics do not come into contact with. GPs are therefore responsible for recognising and testing those patients, referring for treatment and eradicating further spreading of the virus.
These webinars are free and support the following identified learning needs:
- Identify a wider group for HIV and STI testing within the community and the critical role GPs play in making diagnoses
- Recognise the wider support services available to patients with HIV and STIs
- Develop ideas as to how practice nurses can implement and support systems to manage HIV and STI in patients
- Recognise the benefits of rapid initiation of HIV treatment for both individuals with HIV and the wider community
- Recognise the need for contact tracing for HIV and STIs in patients and your responsibilities
My Health Record
This resource will be particularly useful for general practices participating in the Practice Incentives Program eHealth Incentive, which from May 2016 will include a requirement for general practices to upload shared health summaries to the My Health Record.
The online training supports self-paced learning, it will allow healthcare providers to become familiar with, and confident in using, today’s My Health Record system.
There is a combination of existing and new material that will continually be updated and incorporating feedback from users as the My Health Record system continues to evolve. Training includes simulations on how to view and upload information to the My Health Record system using some common clinical information systems, as well as the My Health Record Provider Portal.
The first module of the training introduces healthcare providers to the key principles of the My Health Record system, and familiarises them with its features and functions. Examples of the topics covered in the training are:
- The types of clinical documents held in an individual’s My Health Record;
- Consent and how it relates to viewing and uploading of clinical information;
- Accessing an individual’s My Health Record in the event of an emergency; and
- Ensuring quality data is uploaded to My Health Record.
There are additional modules available which are tailored for healthcare providers in General Practice, Community Pharmacy, Hospitals, Specialist Practice, Allied Health and Residential Aged Care.

Nurses in your Primary Health Network will likely experience the need to discuss end of life care for older patients and their families. They may ask themselves “Would I be surprised if this person was still alive in 12 months’ time?” If the answer to this question is “Yes”, then it’s time to use the new palliAGEDnurse app from CareSearch.
The palliAGEDnurse app can be viewed by computer, tablet or mobile phone. It contains information on how nurses can begin the process of engaging in discussions with patients, families and healthcare team members for the last 12 months of care.
The modules of information are based on three clinical processes: advance care planning (12 months); case conferencing (6 months); and end of life care plans (the last few weeks). Information has been tailored according to the PA Toolkit with links to evidence-based resources suitable for community, residential aged care and general practice settings.
Early reports on the app are that it is easy to use and provides the right information at the right time in a readily accessible manner. We hope the nurses in your practice find it helpful at a time when the answer to the Surprise question is “Yes”.
The palliAGEDnurse app can be downloaded from the iTunes and Play online app stores. Nurses without a smartphone or who prefer to use web resources, can view the content at http://apps.caresearch.com.au/palliAGEDnurse/Home.
