Position Description
Locum General Practitioner (After-Hours)
Locum doctors at CALMS provide comprehensive primary care services after-hours. The role involves clinical assessment and management of patients presenting with acute medical concerns. Consultations may occur in CALMS clinics, via telehealth, or through visits to homes and residential aged care facilities (RACFs) when clinically indicated.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage patients presenting with acute or urgent health issues.
- Work independently during rostered shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
- Attend to home visits and RACFs where appropriate.
- Ensure documentation is completed in a timely, professional manner.
- Comply with RACGP standards, AHPRA requirements, and CALMS policies regarding clinical care, infection control, and patient confidentiality
- Use Medtech and HealthLink for medical record-keeping and communication.
Essential Requirements:
- Unconditional AHPRA registration.
- RACGP Fellowship (FRACGP) or Vocational Registration.
- CPR training compliant with current ARC guidelines (updated within the last 3 years).
- Valid driver’s licence and vehicle access (for mobile consultations).
- Sound knowledge of culturally appropriate care, particularly for NESB and CALD patients.

Practice Description
Canberra Afterhours Locum Medical Service (CALMS)
CALMS is an accredited, not-for-profit medical deputising service that has provided high-quality after-hours care to the Canberra community since 1971. Owned and operated by local GPs, CALMS works in partnership with general practices to ensure patients receive care outside regular hours.
Core Functions:
- After-hours primary care at designated clinics.
- Home visits and residential aged care services.
- Secure and efficient transmission of patient records to their regular GP via HealthLink.
- Collaboration with ACT health services, emergency departments, and diagnostic providers.
Clinic Locations:
- Multiple fixed sites across the ACT with access to nursing support and call centre coordination.
- A fleet-based response model for mobile visits.
Operational Hours:
- Weekday evenings, weekends (24-hour roster), and public holidays
