Telehealth is a model of health care delivery where practitioners use information and communications technology to conduct patient consultations. Brought in during the global pandemic to ensure patient and practitioners’ safety, telehealth is here to stay thanks to new changes in MBS items. Following the launch of MyMedicare in October 2023, patients linked to practices through MyMedicare are now eligible for Level C (longer than 20 minutes), D (longer than 40 minutes) and E (longer than 50 minutes) telehealth items. For full details of these changes follow this link to the Department of Health and Aged Care Factsheet. Majority of general practices and health care providers use telephone or video consultations to reach patients especially in remote and rural areas. It is a convenient alternative especially when the patient is unable to see their practitioner face-to-face.
The Commonwealth government has provided funding for general practices, allied health professionals, and residential aged care facilities to access free video call services through HealthDirect. There are no specific equipment requirements or log-in details required to access this service. All you need is a reliable internet connection and a mobile or computing device that can connect to the clinic’s website and online waiting area.
To enable your practice for Telehealth especially video consulting, simply follow this guide: Telehealth Checklist.
