Why is your GP or health care provider asking, ‘are you of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin’?

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience significantly poorer health compared to non-Indigenous people and are at higher risk of developing certain chronic conditions, such as diabetes. If your doctor or healthcare provider knows you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, they can support you to access specific health services and initiatives to assist you to take control of your own health. Examples of specific services available to you include the Integrated Team Care Program, access to the PBS co-payment measure (commonly known as Close the Gap or ‘CTG’ scripts), the annual 715 Health Check and some additional vaccinations.
